DESCRIPTION

"ESCAPE" is the seventh studio album by AMERICAN ROCK band JOURNEY formed in SAN FRANCISCO in 1973. Released on July 20, 1981 by Columbia Records, it was a groundbreaking album for JOURNEY charting three singles inside Billboard's Top Ten, with "DON'T STOP BELIEVING" reaching number nine, "WHO'S CRYING NOW" number four, and "OPEN ARMS" peaking at number two and holding there for six weeks.

Furthermore, it was the band's first album with keyboardist JONATHAN CAIN, who replaced founding member GREGG ROLIE after he left the band at the end of 1980. The album was co-produced by former LYNYRD SKYNYRD sound technician KEVIN ElSON and one-time QUEEN engineer MIKE STONE, who also engineered the album.

The songs on "ESCAPE" have more of a rock flavor, with more choruses and a harder cadence compared to their previous sound. "WHO'S CRYING NOW" highlights the sweeping fervor of PERRY's voice, whose theme of the ups and downs of a relationship was abundant in JOURNEY's repertoire. With "DON'T STOP BELIEVING", PERRY's whisper of ardor is joined by SCHON's searing electric guitar work, creating a perfect rock song. One of rock's most beautiful ballads, "OPEN ARMS" shines with an honesty and feeling that only STEVE PERRY could muster.

Beyond the singles, there's a certain electricity that runs through the rest of "ESCAPE"'s album. The songs are timeless and together have a way of rekindling the innocence of youthful romance and the rebelliousness of growing up, built from heartfelt songwriting and solid musicianship.
